After graduating in the early 90s with a degree in screen-printed textiles from West Surrey College of Art & Design, Beci Whatley explored many creative avenues and outlets only to encounter quite a few dead-ends.
After moving to Bristol she secured a post with Bristol Fine Art which encouraged her to experiment with a broad range of media and materials with forays into drawing and painting but the element of design never seemed to be terribly far away.
A sabbatical from her creative work ensued whilst Beci focused on helping her young family to grow and thrive but her return to ‘making’ saw a new amalgamation of design, painting and bling.
Her output is still very much textile orientated with heaps of opulent colour and texture and there’s often a floral or botanical element to her work.
Each canvas starts with the application of a base colour followed by flat painted acrylic dots, then raised ones and latterly gems, mosaic tiles are introduced as well as a recent obsession - real skeleton leaves. Each canvas comes together right at the last moment when that last piece is placed down.
Beci’s paintings will bring a powerful sense of colour and bling to our Vestry Café in the early summer, offering a variety of sizes and colours – always affordable and sure to bring a zing of vitality to a dark corner in every home!
