Sally Harker is an artist and printmaker living in Bath. Her work often features little houses and is inspired by childhood building blocks, medieval map drawings and by the beautiful curving terraces and crescents of Bath, the city which she calls home. Sally works from a loft studio within her home, looking out across the city.
Her creative career started with studying sculpture at University and to this day, Sally chooses to combine the two dimensional medium of printmaking with three dimensional objects, either by printing on to wood, or onto fabric.
She relishes the physical process of hand-making a product, from initial ideas and sketches, to carving a printing block, hand-pulling a screen print, and sewing a bag or cushion cover. Hand printing enables Sally to achieve beautifully bright designs using bold colours, with each product being unique, due to the nature of the printing process.
Sally’s screen prints often start off as block prints, which are enlarged and transferred onto a screen. In this way the textures and marks that are characteristic of a block-print are retained but the modification onto a screen means that the artist is able to print larger designs in vivid colours onto fabric.
