Sketch Out at Breakheart Quarry

Wed 24 April 10:30am - 12pm

£8 • Friends £6

Our Sketch Out sessions are led by artist Rose-Marie Marsall-Jane, a seasoned and enthusiastic artist and dedicated sketcher who is keen to impart tips and techniques to help you brush-up your drawing and observational skills.

For the month of April, we’re heading up to the very top of the hill, to the beautiful yet bleak, unforgiving landscape of Breakheart Quarry (atop Stinchcombe Hill). The quarry dates back to the early 1880s and during its fascinating history, the stone from the site was been used to build the former Berkeley Power Station, the base structure for the M5 motorway and for pressure-testing various non-radioactive apparatus from the nuclear industry.

Following its rich and explosive past, the quarry is now a brilliant community project which focuses on learning, leisure and countryside education. And today, it serves as an uncharacteristic Gloucestershire landscape for us to explore and sketch. Huge skies with dramatic undulations to draw, plenty of perspective to play with and an abundance of natural light. And by just crossing the lane, we can venture into the spectacular woodland, following the paths through the sculpture trails. Oodles of drawing interest and inspo for your sketches!

We’ll meet at the Main Hall with the grounds of Breakheart Community Project where there’s ample parking and restrooms.

Places are limited as we’re keen to keep the group small so everyone gets plenty of support in their drawing. Bring along your sketchbook, drawing materials of your choice and dress for the occasion. Stout walking shoes are highly recommended and probably not a bad idea to bring along a waterproof mac!

Work at your own pace with the support and encouragement from Rose with absolutely no need for heaps of prior experience. Sketch Out is all about making your mark in the great outdoors, surrounded by visual inspiration and a posse of eager sketchers and strollers.

You’ll love it - book now to avoid disappointment.
