Susan Kester’s work centres around the woods local to where she lives. Recent colour pencil drawings have expanded during the last 12 months into large gouache paintings where the boundaries between memory, imagination and reality are played out on the surface of the paper. She juxtaposes objects (collected over many years from many different places) and nature to visualise interruptions, both real and imaginary, that come whilst walking. These colourful bold creations are quite a departure from previous quieter graphite drawings and gouache paintings but her interest in investigating a sense of place through both landscape and found object threads through all the work.
Susan was born in the USA. As an adult she has lived and worked in London, Andalucía and Los Angeles. After studying at Goldsmith’s University (BA Fine Art), Kester received a Post Graduate Printmaking Diploma from Central St Martins and has recently completed an MA in Drawing for Fine Art Practice from Oxford Brookes University. She has shown work both in the UK and abroad, and now works and lives near Stroud in Gloucestershire.
