Ros Wise in Uley Bury, Fields and Ramparts

Free entry

For the exhibition of her new paintings, Ros Wise turns her focus to the magnificent Uley Bury – an iron age hill fort which keeps watch over our village and its inhabitants. The Bury is a loved and much-used space for walking, view-seeking as well as providing a splendid sanctuary for the mind as we gain perspective, looking to the horizon of so many neighbouring counties. Many footpaths lead up to the plateau, and Ros’ work celebrates the fields, the pathways and more specifically the plants which adorn the various access paths for the ascent as well as the magnificent views once atop the Bury. The space is a particular favourite for Ros and her exhibition charts the seasons, marking the tonal change in light, in the plants and the crops in the fields.

Textile artist Mary Maddocks has recently relocated to South Gloucestershire with her young family after saying cheerio to a career in law and the bustle of daily life in London. Having grown up in the Welsh countryside, Mary yearned for the open fields, the winding country lanes and night drives out to view the stars from her VW camper van. Her creative work combines a passion for woven crafts with a lifelong love of the natural world to create wall-hangings and woven jewellery, inspired by landscape and texture. She is particularly drawn to the landscapes of West Wales and the Scottish Highlands and the muted, elegant, natural tones are present within of her work.

painting with wool wet felting textiles bold colourful detailed fine art

Sarah Brooker

Free entry

In the earlier part of her creative career, Sarah experimented with various media including sculpture and metal before focussing her career on the then fairly unknown medium of wet-felting. Her ability to draw is reflected in the intricacy of her felted pieces where she seems to be able to literally “paint” with wool. The wet-felting process itself, which involves hot water, soap and friction is a magical process which bonds the fibres permanently. Sarah is drawn to using natural fibres such as merino fleeces, flax and silk to create beautiful colourful images that are often embellished with stitch for a textured 3D effect.

Miranda Millward

Free entry

Miranda Millward's work plays on memories real and imagined and her practice draws visually upon times and places where our common memories overlap. The domestic, ‘feminine pastimes’, childhood memories or childish pursuits are often visual reference points. Vintage ephemera, old postcards, children’s books, paper sewing patterns, found photographs, volumes of encyclopedia, lurid-coloured cookbooks, magazines and discarded papers are endlessly sought out, cut up, layered, juxtaposed and transformed to create collaged works that play on our collective and fragmented memories … both visual and tactile. Miranda’s work is often playful and slightly tongue in cheek but sometimes there is also a sense of menace or of a story with an ambiguous ending…

London-based maker Shannon Clegg is designer and part-time educator who works across a broad range of craft-based materials and processes to create products, furniture and objects. For her exhibition with Prema, Shannon will focus on her body of work “Bouquet” which started with a scruffy old wooden flower press abandoned at a Wimbledon car boot sale. The lucky find was pocketed and rehomed in her London studio where it was deconstructed to explore a new way of working the traditional 2D craft technique of pressing flowers. The unique hand moulding process enables flowers to be pressed into a variety of 3D vase like forms that can be displayed as a centre piece - no need for watering!
