Emerging out of landscape, the paper structures from artist Carole Bury are complemented with drawn responses to their origin. Built on the traditions of embroidery, her machine stitched paper textiles share the sensitive, descriptive gestures of her drawn line.

The collection of feather and bird pieces combine concentrations of stitch, colour, gold-leaf and papers, producing quiet meditative pieces. The processes result in pieces with their own history.

Carole’s landscape drawings exhibit expressive marks and a lightness, striving to convey a moment. The composition is drawn repeatedly from outdoor sketches and photographs, slowly subtracting details, until the moment is right, and the essence is released.

Living and working in rural Gloucestershire, inspiration is revealed on the threshold of an expansive and much-loved landscape. Following her studies at Dursley Grammar School, Carole went on to study for her degree in Fine Art Embroidery and Drawing from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Her drawings are regularly shown at the Royal West Academy and she is often an  invited artist in residence at Nature in Art in Twigworth, Gloucester.

Throughout her exhibition with Prema, Carole will be enjoying a pop-up residency here at Prema. She will be working within the Upstairs Gallery, creating new work and sharing her studio processes and practice with visitors.

Carole’s pop-up residency will run from 10.30am until 3.30pm on the following dates:
